There are years of passion behind the scenes, the original Mrs Makepeace, a trained pastry chef, delighted Audrey Hepburn with her pavlova. Having handed over the pastry cutters to son Keith, also a trained chef, the hotel restaurant serves up a seasonal menu focusing on fabulously fresh locally sourced ingredients. Designed by head chef Ian MacDonald the 2 AA Rosette restaurant makes the most of the nearby produce, catch of the day and fabulous foodie finds.

Always serving up sumptuous and warm sustenance, the Makepeace family favourites are Start Bay scallops and, of course, hand-picked Salcombe crab. Other spring favourites include Confit of Gressingham Duckling with Wild Mushrooms and Fillet of Westcountry Beef with Devonshire Blue Cheese Gratin. As for the desserts, though Hepburn’s pavlova is a classic, Ian has more delights up his chef whites, including Hot Chocolate Fondant with Devonshire Clotted Cream and Baked Marmalade Cheesecake with Citrus salad. Perfect for filling up on before retiring to bed and snuggling under Devonshire wool blankets (after a quick night-cap of Western Hunt Ruby Port perhaps) and watching the sea turn dark. Special parties, supper for two, family gatherings and groups of friends Soar Mill Cove Hotel has the space for that exalted exploring and making of memories to warm the cockles when guests return to the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
