Tobago Blue haven is again making a big splash in the Beau Monde

After a refurbishment program gave the historic property a facelift, Blue Haven was Voted Caribbean’s Best Boutique Hotel 2010 (Caribbean Travel & Life) and Tobago’s Leading Hotel (World Travel Awards 2010.)

Already in May 2007 Blue Haven received the most prestigious “Sustainable Tourism AWARD” by Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and Islands Magazine.

When Austrian Entrepreneur Karl Pilstl and his Trinidadian wife Marilyn bought romantic Blue Haven it was closed for a quarter of a century and totally dilapidated. “Our goal was not only to renovate and preserve the historic architecture but also to create an environmentally sound project” says Karl Pilstl. The original design with open Lobby, Bar and colonial-style Restaurant, fanned by trade winds and sea breeze, along with the flying/double roof for the new buildings using natural cross ventilation for cooling purposes and a solar-based Water Heating System, Blue Haven consumes less than half the electricity of a conventional hotel. An environmental brochure listing all other efforts like state of the art sewage treatment plant, water saving double toilet flush, modern 3-phase transformer, use of locally and organically grown vegetables etc., invites all guests to support the eco-oriented operation of the hotel. “In this way our guests feel even more comfortable and enjoy their vacation in paradise spiced with true Caribbean Island Life: laid back, relaxed, no problem…” assures Karl Pilstl (Caribbean Hotelier of the Year 2008).

Being on the top of all independent customer satisfaction surveys done by the Ministry of Tourism reflects the dedication of staff to quality service. Therefore it was not surprising that Blue Haven was voted:

Situated on a majestic cliff overlooking Bacolet Bay, historic Blue Haven was idyllic scenery for several Golden Movies in the 1950’s. Splendidly refurbished while retaining its retro-charm Blue Haven combines the ambience and atmosphere of “yesteryear” with modern living. If former guests like Robert Mitchum, Rita Hayworth or Jack Lemmon were to visit today, they’d find the same (now century-old) palms lining the driveway, remenants of an old fortress with cannons, the same coral-pink ’50s facade and the original octagonal lobby topped by a dome opening onto a broad terrace surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and the azure blue sea. Experience the Grandeur of old fashion Nostalgia!

As romantic Blue Haven offers all the amenities of a stylish boutique hotel, it is an ideal hideaway for weddings and honeymoons. All 55 rooms and (Honeymoon) Suites have private balconies with breathtaking ocean-view. Breakfast will be served in bed if desired or in the restaurant overlooking the ocean. Bar-be-que for lunch at the No-Problem Beach Bar. At dusk, guests can sip exotic cocktails at the lounge-terrace bar while watching spectacular sunsets before moving on to dinner in the Colonial Style Villa “Shutters on the Bay”. The excellent menus featuring seafood including Lobster and Crayfish combine International Gourmet Cuisine with West Indian ingredients and spices.

In between, relax by the pool or take a swim at the hotel’s secluded palm fringed beach where according to the novel of Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe was stranded on September 30th, 1659. The anchor of the ship can still be seen on the hotel site. Play tennis at the resort’s court, get a relaxing massage or golf at one of the courses nearby. Personally guided rainforest hikes and bird-watching tours are organized for the more eco-orientated traveler. Scuba diving and snorkeling at different coral reefs can be arranged as well as deep-sea fishing. Alternatively, just lie down in a hammock, listen to the waves and do nothing at ALL!
